It’s been 12 years since the last Jefferson Starship release, 2008’s Jefferson’s Tree of Liberty and It’s About Time is the new single from their new 2020 album, Mother of the Sun.

The song was co-written by Jude Gold, Cathy Richardson and legendary former vocalist Grace Slick. Examination of the lyrics reveals a social commentary presumably on the state of the earth and perhaps modern-day America.

“Old white men have had their turn
Thousands of years what have we learned
The hurricanes churn and the wild fires burn. We’re mourning our sons they’re forging more guns”

It’s a suitably very social-conscious lyric that may feel a tad cliché, but I guess there’s so many problems in the world right now – inspiration is not too difficult to find at the moment.

“It’s about time, it’s about time, it’s about time It’s about time, it’s about time, it’s about time It’s about earth, it’s about life
It’s about saving the world. We’ve got to unite now It’s about time.”

The chord changes are nice and instrumentation is nice and clear in the mix, particularly the vocal interplay. It’s a catchy, albeit slightly musically uninspiring – although very much in the vein of American heartland radio rock, so you know exactly what to expect. This is what they do and they do it extremely well. The chiming guitar motif and stomping rhythm section will embed itself in your brain for the 4 minutes or so song length.

This track will make you nod your heart and feel warm inside – it’s a fantastic feel good track released at a time where Jefferson Starship’s homeland is practically politically on its knees.

The album which this is taken from is released in September 2020 and if the single is anything to go by, expect a good, solid, familiar slab of catchy, well-written rock to make you feel good.
